Forget the DC Tax Scam. We Got An Interpreter Scam.

Never mind it being Friday the 13th today... The Washington Post Metro section had a story about an embezzlement case involving the local community college. What upset me was finding that the former coordinator of interpreters for the deaf was involved as well as one of the interpreters, and I knew Mark Kreidler from when I attended and worked with him on getting interpreters for my classes. A bit more upsetting is that I was going to use him as a reference...

The DC tax scam ran for around several years and cost DC at least $20 million dollars. (use keywords dc tax scam on Google or the Post)

I'm disappointed in you, Mark Kreidler. You may have caused damage to the jobs of other interpreter coordinators and interpreters around the nation. Your position involved more than just the trust of deaf students attending the college.

Sorry, I don't. I never did have one. I should have had one with him when he came up to talk with me before the graduation ceremony in 2005.

I'm a student in the INT program at NVCC. I've never met the person involved.

Are you an instructor or student at NVCC ?

There was an Interpreter Agency in Oregon that took $150,000 from interpreter's money then BANKRUPTED so they didn't have to pay them. They started ripping off the INTERN's !!! when the certified Terps refused to work for that Agency.

Gee! Gee! Interpreters are just like audists raping deaf community! They do not care about us and they want glory and money! Those fuckers!

Art, I graduated in 2005 from their network security program and met him a few times, though I emailed him a number of times about my classes. He always made sure I was taken care of.

Anonymous, the paper didn't make a mistake. At the time the article was printed, I was a student there, almost done with classes. That's the same Kreidler, sadly enough.

I'm really sorry that you feel this way. I feel very fortunate to be a part of such a good program (Interpreter) at Northern Virginia Community College. I've made some really good friends in the Deaf community over the years and am happy to learn more and more to effectivly communicate. All my fellow students and myself are really enjoying the program and study hard to become GOOD interpreters. It's A LOT of very enjoyable work

I was a student of his and I never believed he was the interpreter he claimed to be. He always seemed shady. I also know the person who was arrested with him; she was in my classes. I am surprised about her, but not as much as I thought I'd be. I'd like to know if he was convicted and if he's going to jail......it's where he needs to be

I am an interpreter who worked under him for a short period at NOVA. I've never met a sleazier and less ethical individual in my interpreting career, and left a job that I truly enjoyed just so that I would not be associated with him in any way. I hope he gets exactly what he deserves! Now that he is out of NOVA, I am seriously considering returning to interpret there.

So was he / were they convicted? What was the sentence? Fine plus restitution?

Hello, Kim. I've not heard anything about the case since that article. Various Google searches don't turn up anything except for his arrest. Washington Post's archive won't give me full articles without buying the article itself.
